This week has been EXHAUSTING. Truthfully, it's like that a lot when working with Preschool children. The best part though, is that it was fun. Because it is summer we are more active outside than we usually are during any other season. We are outside early due to the California Desert heat and we stay out until the children are done with the outside weather. This does not always curb indoor flipping or running but it does take the edge off, since it is too hot to go out in the afternoon. Even with Preschool ages it is important to keep up with some of the major happenings in the world with them. For example the Olympic Games coming up in August. Every time the Olympics roll around I hold a preschool Olympics day. During that time we learn about where the Olympics started, what continent that country is located and where the Olympics will be located and what continent that will be located. We talk about the colors of the uniforms for the teams and the parts of the flag they may come from and we watch videos of past Olympic events. Not every Preschool Olympic event is the same. I tailor each event for the children I have in my classroom. This year the children were too hyper. They were not going to absorb any of the information and would have ended up frustrated because they were ready to go and PLAY!! So instead we decided to go right to the different events held in the summer and winter Olympics and talk about what the athletes needed to do to get ready. In order to run the Preschool Olympics the first thing you have to realize, is that, children this young are not good with competition. That does not mean to not introduce them. It means that while we talked about people getting medals during the Olympics and racing against each other, the purpose of the games for this age is to expose them to diverse role models and encourage them to have fun while working hard. Our event started with our March around with the flag to open the ceremonies. Then we started our events! Sit Ups Push Ups Jumping Jacks School yard dash Water jumping Gold Medal Hunting. After our events we were awarded our medals and took a picture together with the flag and water day happened!! Events like this do not have to be a lot of work. Medals, printed certificates and lots of enthusiasm carried the day. The children were proud to show their parents what they got for their effort and looked forward to telling them about the events and what Olympic events we saw at circle time. Disclaimer: There will be one or two younger children who decide that they are not going to do the event the way you set it up. That is ok! It's more about having fun than anything else. Happy Olympics!! Ms. Tessie |
