. This month the theme for Mother Goose Time is Winter Wonderland. For this theme we are learning about all the different part of winter. The concept of winter is easy to get with this theme if you live in an area with snow. But we live in the desert. It was 72 degrees today. And sunny. So I am using a ton of real world videos to explain the concept of snow and I am using it as a way to include the children who have been around snow in the conversation. They are enjoying teaching their friends about where they saw snow and what it felt like. It is also good because we comparing and contrasting what happens in the desert and what happens in places where it snows. We have talked about why it may not snow here and the fact that there are locations in California where it does snow. Which is where the weekly theme of mountains became very useful. We also live 45 minute from an area where it does snow and we discussed why it would snow 45 minutes away from us but not here. I find that with abstract themes such as this, you have to make sure that you can show them real world experiences or videos so that they can actually connect with the subject. One of the favorite art pieces so far from this theme was the snowman name project. I will admit that I didn't follow the lesson plan exactly. Mainly because I have built my entire business on making sure that the children are doing their own art work. I am not a fan of art work where it depends on me putting it together for the children or directing their movements. It makes the art work less meaningful to me. I have seen the difference in the way children talk about artwork that they do totally on their own and the art work that I have a hand in making. If they have done it themselves they are eager to show their parents and to tell them about the process of making their art. If they did not make it themselves they still want to show their parents but they have much less to say about the art work. All in all Winter is Here and it's not a disaster for us :) Keep teaching!
